Global Warming And Its Effects - 1571 Words
As global issues today become increasingly controversial, many people are inclined to believe that Global Warming is an issue that can take a backseat to more significant issues that plague todayââ¬â¢s society. The information presented throughout my research in regards to the rising sea levels and the melting of glaciers and ice shelves, highly indicates that it cannot. What many Americans fail to realize is that if sea levels continue to rise due to Global Warming, then more than half of Louisiana, Florida, parts of southern California, and the entire eastern coastline would cease to exist. Global Warming, by definition, is the ââ¬Å"gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth s atmosphere, generally attributed to the greenhouseâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦[Earthââ¬â¢s temperature is definitely warmer than it was hundreds of years ago, but not for natural reasons]. Gradually the Earthââ¬â¢s surface has become warmer over the last century and most scientists believe that the burning of fossil fuels is responsible for the temperature spike. According to Holli Riebeek, the Education and outreach specialist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Global Warming is happening now, and greenhouse gases are responsible. The burning of fossil fuels causes the release of greenhouse gases, which then become trapped inside our atmosphere and cause Earthââ¬â¢s surface to warm. The greenhouse effect provides a habitable environment for all species on Earth, but [the Earthââ¬â¢s atmosphere now contains more greenhouse gases than ever before1]. The Earth is becoming a more efficient greenhouse, which will eventually cause the Earth to become inhabitable. [The natural causes of the warming of the Earth are too minute to explain how rapid the increase in temperature has been in the past 50 years. Between 1906 and 2005, the Earthââ¬â¢s temperature had risen .3 degrees, but in the last 50 years, the temperature increase rate has almost doubled and is predicted to continually increase] (Riebeek). Contrastingly, despite the knowledge and evidence that greenhouse gases are a large factor of Global Warming, some

Question: Discuss About The International Journal Hospitalet Management? Answer: Introduction A reward is considered as something which is given to an employee or individual in return of some good behavior, attainment and service. On the other hand, performance recognition is considered as some special acknowledgement, attention and notice. In several companies, reward and performance recognition programs are regarded as a motivator that helps in enhancing the performance level of an employee. The reward systems must affect the behavior of the employees measurably, improve and enhance results and deliver intangible and tangible awards that every employee can earn and enjoy. The human resource managers of a company are highly responsible for implementing and designing the reward systems for motivating the employees and staff members (Armstrong Taylor, 2014). The purpose of the report is to discuss about the performance management and rewards of Samsung Company in order to manage and retain the staff members. A good reward system is regarded as a pulling strategy. The reason behind this is reward systems pull people to give their best shot at the organizations. Samsung Company has been facing troubles since the year 2015, despite having good reward system. One of the major reasons can be lack of motivation. The report throws light on the overall objectives of reward systems and the factors considered while implementing and designing a reward system. The employees of Samsung must be encouraged as well as motivated by giving rewards on the basis of their achievement level. They must feel good about what they are achieving. It should be kept in mind that a positive attitude of the associates always yields better outcomes for the organization. For integrating this culture, the employees got to be patient and consistent with their performance level (Barrick et al., 2015). In simpler terms, right rewards given to the right associates, with right reasons will yield right results. Discussion On designing a reward program, it is important to consider the Samsung Companys goals, which the reward program must support. Identifying the desired behaviors or performance of the employees will help in reinforcing the goals of the organization. The key measurements of the behavior or performance must be determined on the basis of the groups or individuals previous achievements. For reaping benefits like increased productivity and performance level, the organization must design a reward and recognition program which must identify Samsungs goals (Beardwell Thompson, 2014). Types of Reward Programs Majority of the organizations have a number of reward programs which are aimed at both team and individual performance. Samsung Company can apply some of these strategies, which are listed as follows, in order to improve their level of performance; Variable Pay Paying for performance or variable pay is a type of compensation program, where a portion of the employees pay is regarded at risk. A variable pay can also be tied with the companys performance, resulting from a business unit or an employees accomplishments or the combination of these both factors. It can take different forms like bonus programs, one time awards, stock options and others. Some organizations choose to pay the employees lesser than their competitors, but however, attempt to encourage them through variable programs (Bratton Gold, 2012). Bonuses The bonus programs are usually a reward for individual accomplishment and quite frequently used in the sales organizations, in order to motivate the salespersons for generating higher profits and additional businesses. Bonuses can also be utilized for recognizing the companys group accomplishments. These programs are generally considered as short term motivators. However, bonuses are to be carefully structured in order to ensure that the program is motivating the employees to give their best shot in the company (Chun et al., 2013). Profit Sharing Profit sharing is a type of strategy of creating huge sum of money to be given to the employees by taking a particular amount from the companys overall profits. The percentage given to the employee is equal to the percentage of the individuals salary, which is disbursed after the business closes its tenure for the year. The benefits are provided via contributions to the individuals plans or in cash. The aim behind sharing profits is to reward the individuals for their contributions to the organizations achieved goal of profit (Davidson Stevens, 2012). Stock Options In recent years, stock options have become a popular method of rewarding the middle management as well as other employees in both start ups and mature companies. The stock option programs for the employees give them the right to buy a particular amount of the companys shares at a fixed price, for a limited time span. These shares are generally authorized by the board of directors of the company as well as approved by the shareholders (Doyle Locke, 2014). Advantages and Disadvantages of Reward Systems Employee reward systems act as a motivator in increasing their performance level. The rewards come in many forms such as; direct and indirect incentives, raises, bonuses, profit sharing, stock options and more. The reward and recognition programs are generally implemented and determined by the managers for motivating the employees to raise their performance standards (Shields et al., 2015). However, there are certain advantages and disadvantages of reward systems, which are discussed in this part of the report. Advantages The employee reward systems can generate a healthy competition among the teams and individuals of any organization. If a certain number of members receive rewards based on their performance, it will motivate others to work harder and give their best. In addition to this, commission schemes will help in improving the sales staff to work harder and smarter. Moreover, designing a reward system intelligently can prove to be a boon for the companies who look for retaining their employees for a long term. It also makes the employees feel better, when their hard work gets appreciated and recognized. Samsung Company has a good reward system, which is a major advantage of the organization (Williams, 2013). Disadvantages Employees in an organization, who work harder and better every day, get the most number of rewards. Such factor poses a little problem to the organizations overall development. Focusing on the productivity can negatively influence the quality of other employees work, who thinks that the system is biased. It becomes harder to quantify the staff members overall contribution to the organization. Reward systems also increase the overall business costs. Therefore, proper planning is necessary before introducing any reward system to the organization. However, the reward system became a disadvantageous one for the Samsung Company. Even if the organization has good reward system, the employees are not motivated enough to give their best performances. This has led to the poor production level of the organization (Armstrong Taylor, 2014). Problems of Samsung Company in managing and retaining staff This part of the report discusses about the major problems of Samsung Company. The company has been facing problem in managing and retaining their staff members. However, there are six major determinants that influence the performance of each and every employee of an organization. It is seen that the Samsung Company rewards its employees with good amounts, but the overall performance is still poor. The major issues are being discussed here. The primary force which drives the employees into action is motivation. It has a huge effect on increasing the employees abilities as well as willingness to perform and give their best. Motivation helps in engaging the employees in a goal directed behavior that in turn satisfies their needs and promotes the level of job performance (Goetsch Davis, 2014). However, the company is not able to motivate its employees even though it is spending huge on their bonuses. In addition to this, individual performance is also influenced by their competence to perform the activities or job responsibilities. The word competence is referred to the extent to which an individual regards himself/herself capable of doing a job. It gives an indication that the individual has a control over the events which occur inside and outside the company instead of the events controlling him/her (Hendry, 2012). The ability of an individual also influences his/her job performance. The ability is an overall perception of an individual regarding his/her skill and knowledge to perform the given activity. Knowledge represents the technical attributes and skill represents the practical ability of performing any task (Goetsch Davis, 2014). Moreover, the organizational resources can be both physical and psychological. The physical factors are; infrastructure, layout of the plant and more. On the other hand, the psychological factors are basically the compensation, trainings, labor management relationships, development, motivation, leadership and more (Hendry, 2012). The company has good infrastructure and plant layout; but when it comes to trainings, basic compensation, the company lacks in it. In addition to this, a healthy environment of workplace is always productive for introducing a positive employee performance. The processes must be designed in such a manner that it helps the employees to put their skills, expertise and knowledge to the work. Moreover, the employees must be given with a proper balance between work and personal life. Furthermore, social gatherings and events can also be conducted in order to enhance the team-morale (Kohtamki et al., 2012). Recommendations To recommend, the Samsung Company can conduct a performance management procedure in order to manage and retain their staff members. Performance management is a continuous procedure of improving employee performance by setting up team and individual goals. Therefore, it can be recommended that, an effective performance management system is the best when it develops the employee engagement and in turn, establishes the true pay for the performance culture. Improving morale, introducing reward and recognition programs, increasing the overall productivity and creating loyalty among the staff members can contribute to Samsung organizations managing and retaining employees procedure (Kirchmer, 2012). The overall process of linking an organizations compensation plan to the team or individual performances include measuring, rewarding and setting an achievable performance expectation (Lee et al., 2014). There are several ways to conduct the performance management procedure. Few of them, which the Samsung Company can introduce in their policies, are; The individual and corporate strategies are communicated and defined company wide. The individual performances are appraised along with feedbacks as well as formal documentation. The overall progress on goals are managed and monitored by providing guidance on the performance level. The compensations and bonuses are given on the basis of the employees performance level. Setting up of proper reward and recognition programs (Williams, 2013). In addition to this, the Samsung Company can also emphasize on the performance appraisal system. A performance appraisal is also referred as a performance evaluation, performance review, employee appraisal and development discussion. It is a particular method through which the individual job performances of the employees are evaluated and documented. It helps in maintaining the records of the employees performance levels for determining their wage structure, raises, salaries and compensation packages. The performance appraisal of an employee is done through promoting them, providing them with compensations or loyalty bonuses, motivating and encouraging them to give their best to the organization (Manzoor, 2012). Furthermore, performance feedback is also considered as an essential communication tool in any organization, be it a start up or a matured one. It is one the essential tools used in managing the employees performance. The constructive feedbacks can praise the performances of the employees or correct their poor performance standards. It is relatively easier to encourage and motivate the employees in an open organizational culture. Performance feedback will help the employees to improve their standards and work better for the Samsung organization. Therefore, these solutions of performance management, appraisal and feedback can be applied to the companys policies in order to retain the employees (Marchington et al., 2016). Conclusion To conclude, by applying a reward and recognition system as well as providing the employees with financial benefits, Samsung Company can succeed to a huge extent. This, in turn, will help in increasing the employees satisfaction at the workplace. If the organization starts rewarding their staff members, the employees will show a certain desire to improve their standard of performance, in order to get recognized. By rewarding the employees, on the basis of their performance level, the junior employees will also get motivated to perform better. It will assist them on showing their abilities to the organization. In addition to this, this system will help in creating a positive environment of work. However, Samsung Company must have a clear reward and recognition system for motivating the employees to give their best shot. In addition to the reward system, Samsung also needs to motivate its employees and train them on a daily basis in order to manage and retain them. The report also thro ws light on the disadvantages of reward system, which the organization must keep in mind before implementation. References Armstrong, M., Taylor, S. The Differences between Buddhist Music in Japan Essay Example
The Differences between Buddhist Music in Japan Essay Aragua The Differences between Buddhist Music in Japan, China and Tibet The Differences between Buddhist Music in Japan, China and Tibet The whole purpose of religion is to facilitate love and compassion, patience, tolerance, humility, forgiveness. -Dalai Lama Music plays an important role in religion, significantly influencing the worship practices of individuals who follow these faiths. As the music of a certain faith is influenced by the culture of a place, the music of certain peoples and places are influenced by the music of important religions that become deeply embedded in the culture. In this way, musical styles develop that are both religious and cultural, and are a reflection of both. This music is held in high regard by the people of these religions and cultures because it is the music that represents those aspects of life that are most precious. Culturally, music is a source of nationalist pride and unity for a group of people. In the Buddhist practice, music and chants are used for meditation across the global span of the religion. However, different forms of music and chants are used in a variety of ways throughout religious practices. The music and different forms of chants in the Buddhist religion affect Buddhist practices, and are also influenced by the religion and the different locations around the world in which Buddhism is practiced. Japan, China, and Tibet have the highest concentration of Buddhists and Buddhism is an integral part of the culture in these nations. In addition to Buddhism being reflected clearly in the cultures of Japan, China, and Tibet, each of these nations also has their own forms of prayer expressed through raying musical styles. In order to further investigate the styles and forms of Buddhist music, a short history of the religion will bring many of the elements of this cultural and religious music to light. Buddhism is based on a concurrent following of Four Noble Truths and an Eightfold Path. The Four Noble Truths are: 1) that life consists of suffering, 2) that the origin of suffering is attachment, 3) that suffering can only be ended through Miranda, and 4) that the path to the end of suffering is the Eightfold Path. This Development. The basis of the Buddhist faith is the belief in Karma (that the sections one makes in their current life will be returned to them in their future lives) and Rebirth (that one will be reincarnated in another life after death). There are a variety of different forms of prayer, worship, and meditation practices in the Buddhist religion, and each of these practices involve different forms of music and chanting. Every detail of faith, from the Four Noble Truths to the deep belief in Karma, is reflected in the sounds of Buddhism. These sounds have become a part of the Japanese, Chinese, and Tibetan cultures and are a constant reminder of the Buddhist tradition in these parts of the world. For example, In a Zen temple, the hours of the day may be marked by the deep somber tones of the big o-gang bell in the bell tower, evoking the idea of impermanence (Mall 1959). A bell tower can be heard for miles around and will create an environment of thoughtful contemplation for the surrounding area, further connecting the culture of a location with the precious music of a religion, and constantly reminding practicing Buddhists of their beliefs and education to follow the Eightfold Path. The effect of a Buddhist Temple bell tower may be felt in a number of religious raciest; the Muslim call to prayer is heard from a mosque across entire cities at midday, and the melodious clanging of Catholic and Christian cathedral bells may at times reach a volume that could only be described as a roar, but each of these sounds is a reflection of the religious practices these holy buildings house. Buddhism is set apart from other religions in the intricate and sacred ceremonies that revolve around the music of the religion. Wellness expresses his rapture at Buddhist music, There is scarcely any religious denomination on the face of this earth in whose cared ceremonies music holds a more prominent place than Buddhism (Wellness 1957) In oral traditions of Buddhism, the words of a sacred text are learned and recited from memory. Chant is a ritual used as a musical representation of this oral tradition. Not only are sacred texts memorized, but when these texts are recited, they are said with rhythm and pitches, which create a more spiritual and reverent atmosphere during the ritual of chant. The Buddhist monks who perform these chants therefore memorize the sacred texts as well as the specific choral or pitched movements or intervals that are carefully placed throughout the chants to emphasize certain parts of the texts and evoke certain emotions tied to the sacred traditions reflected in the texts as well as in the act of chanting. This ritual of chanting is a religious experience for the monk who is performing the chants as well as for the viewers of the bring awareness to the mentality of truth and living deeply connected with the present moment, an important aspect of faith for followers of Buddhism. Again, Just as different countries have different styles of music that reflect their ultras and people, the three countries in which Buddhism is most prominent, Japan, China, and Tibet, have different cultural forms of Buddhist music that represent their strong Buddhist faith as well as integrate the musical instruments and aspects of their culture. The music of these countries is similar in many ways, laced together by the common thread of Buddhism to guide the development of music for worship, but each nation still reflects the unique culture of the place in the Buddhist music of the people. SOMY is an improvised chant that has two styles: rooky and rooky. SOMY uses the You scale, a pentatonic scale with ascending intervals of two, three, two, two and three semitones. SOMY is a form of esoteric ritual chant that is used worldwide in the Buddhist tradition, though the use of this chant is also relevant to the place in which people worship. SOMY is a type of music that possesses mystical syllables inhabiting the recitation of certain mantras. When this form of music is performed, the assembled congregation attain a blessing from hearing these chants. Since SOMY is a type of chant and meditation that is used in the Buddhist religion and cultures, it is influenced by the Buddhist faith, but t is also influenced by the cultures around it. While most forms of Japanese Buddhism use music quite prevalently, true SOMY is a rare find in Japan, present only in a select few temples on specific ceremonial occasions. In the scope of Buddhism in Japan, the influence of Buddhism of other cultures and the influence of other languages are accepted as a part of the music, and part of the ceremony. Japanese Buddhist liturgical chants are divided into three different categories: Bonsai, hymns in which Chinese characters stand for Sanskrit sounds, Was, hymns with texts written in Japanese, and Kansas, hymns with purely Chinese texts. In the way Chinese text substituting Sanskrit, and Chinese text standing alone are clear examples of the blending of languages and culture throughout Japanese Buddhism, and the truly worldwide breadth of the Buddhist religion. Surprisingly, hymnal texts written in Japanese only occupy one of the categories of Japanese Buddhist texts. The most melodious of these chants is the Was. Was tends to be heavily syllabic in style, poetic in text, and with a clear line, creating a musical chant that is most like the more Western understanding of religious hymns and worship music. Compared to Was chants, SOMY is much more complex musically, and the rarity of this type of worship music makes it that much more intriguing for anyone who is privileged to hear it performed. There are two levels of SOMY that are observed, the first style lies exclusively in the domain of priesthood, which passes from master to pupil continuously, as reflection of the that is observed is for the public to observe, but is still only performed by Buddhist priests and monks. Yet many of these mantras, or Hookup, are reserved only for those in priesthood. Hookup literally meaner a mystery piece or secret composition. The secrecy of these mantras is due to the belief that they are a psychic and cosmic force. There is power to this chant because of the presence of the mystic syllable mm, which is sacred in the Buddhist religion. In this way, the importance of music to Buddhism is further solidified by the private performances of SOMY, proving that the music and chants of the Buddhist tradition are not only for the benefit of the congregation or as a type of worship, but also as a sacred way of passing on priesthood between holy leaders. In another form of these Japanese chants, Kansas, four ritual sections comprise and cake sense of the chants, each a different genre of chants, used for different occasions and to evoke a variety of different emotional responses. The first, Bombay, is a hymn of praise, used during ecstatic times of worship. Second is the Gangs, an elaborate chant performed by priests while they deliberately and ceremoniously scatter lotus flowers, a Buddhist symbol of enlightenment. The don-on is an offering of pure chant or mantra to the Buddhist deity, Buddha himself. Lastly, the Shake-Joy is a chant that occurs toward the end of any service as a closing, a contemplative farewell. These chants explore Japanese Buddhism in greater depth and allow one to understand the different ways that music and chants are used in the ceremonies and services of the religion. The music of Buddhism is central to the faith because without music many Buddhist ceremonies could not take place, which is a crucial difference between Buddhism and other faiths, many of which employ music to aid worship, but the central aspect of the religion would not be lost if the music were missing. The important role that music plays to the Buddhist faith is clearly represented by the complexity of the music and chants. Each song and chant has a pacific meaning, a particular time and place, and even is performed by certain Buddhist leaders. After the Eddo period, Western music and influences enter Japan during a time known as the Meijer Period (1868-1911); however, the new western influence did not completely replace the traditional music styles that were established during the Eddo period. The Meijer period introduced western concepts such as harmonistic and fixed meter and tempo, which was not common in music from the Eddo period. These western influences were combined with the traditional Japanese scale and were implemented into the newly developed public school systems. Many of the songs that were used were traditional Japanese folk songs or western songs that had been translated into Japanese text. One of the primarily Japanese instruments with a religious affiliation is the Chihuahuas. Most of the recent pieces played on this instrument are derived from spiritual or meditative songs. During the Eddo period, a group of priests called the Sumo used the instrument as a spiritual tool to help focus breathing for meditation. These priests were from a sect of Buddhism that saw the instrument as a way to achieve enlightenment by playing songs that inspired Winnie is a term used by the Chinese that refers to music. Fabian is a term to denote Buddhist monastic chants. It has been used by the Chinese since Buddhism was introduced. Fabian in translation meaner scripture recitation; it is emphasized that the chants be tranquil. Chant is the only body of liturgical action and an expression of the liturgy itself. It is used to channel liturgical participation amongst the people. Gate is a sacred verse. Buddhist music has made an influence on world music Just as it has been influenced. Buddhist famine, which is characterized by a relaxed and say pace with solemn, soft tones. Chinese music has been influenced by Famine when it was developed to popularize a new style of giving sermons and publicizing the Dharma sung to famine melodies. According to the Vienna in Ten Recitations, regularly listening to Buddhist famine can give the following five benefits: a reduction in bodily fatigue, less confusion and forgetfulness, a reduction in mental weariness, a more elegant voice and greater ease in both personal expression and communication. The style of chanting in Tibet is called choral singing, it allows the monks to sing solo chords. The monks of Tibet are able to produce deep, guttural monotones that disperse into polyphony. As a Western listener it is likely to assume that the monks are singing in parts, however each monk is displaying a full set of sounds and pitches of firsts, thirds, fifths and additional overtones as well. The ability to produce these overtones and multi-phonics with one voice has been researched and there is no reason or explanation why these monks are able to sing this way. There has been studies that think it is because of the location of Tibet because it is located at the highest elevation in the world. The monks begin training at the age of twelve, before their voices will be classified as bass, baritone or tenor voice. The average monk is able to produce a D two octaves below middle C; which is beneath the range of most male singers. The ability to produce these sounds comes with great focus which allows the singer to achieve the awareness that is stated in the Eightfold Path. Meditation Mindfulness is Buddha word for meditation. By mindfulness he meaner: you should always remain alert, watchful. You should always remain present. Not a single thing should be done in a sort of sleepy state of mind. You should not move like a somnambulist, you should move with a sharp consciousness. SOHO There is a sense in which the monk, in deep meditation, is thought to hear within himself spiritual sounds of specific types that only he can hear. The frame drum, cymbals, conch horn, double-reed oboe, long trumpet and thigh-bone trumpet are though to evoke the thudding, crashing, ringing and tapping within his body; which mirrors the spiritual forces of the universe. (Mbabane: 21) Upon hearing these sounds, the pe rson may naturally become mindful of the Buddha, mindful of the Dharma and tart, so music inspires or induce the spirit with sounds that they hear. Music plays an important role in religion, influencing the worship practices of each individual who follow these faiths. From SOMY chanting in Japan to choral, monophonic singing in Tibet, there are many differences and approaches in attaining mental wellness and achieving focal awareness in the Buddhist religion to spread the Dharma and become as Buddha-like in nature as the individual Buddhist follower can. Whether one believes in a religion or not, and whether one believes in rebirth or not, there isnt anyone who doesnt appreciate kindness and compassion. -Dalai Lama Bibliography Chin, Pi-yen. Technology And Society - Term Paper Example Technology and healthcare Gone are the days when diseases like TB and malaria were uncontrollable mass-killers. The advent of technology has made it possible to ensure effective prevention and treatment of such diseases. In addition, technology has the ability to provide a secure and convenient environment for interaction between doctors and patients. For example, these days, it is possible for patients of even far-off places to be in constant touch with their doctors through modern communication devices. Yet another point is the flexibility it allows for doctors and patients. The availability of modern communication devices makes it possible for doctors to identify and handle more critical issues first and less important ones at a later convenient time. Migration History Paper - Essay Example Firstly, it is the understanding from the interview that was conducted that ultimately the migrant experience within the United States has remained unchanged since late 18th century. Although technology has increased, jet travel has enabled individuals to rapid transit from international origins, and the complexity of paperwork and documentation within the United States has shifted, the first experience for the migrant is one in which hardship, deprivation, and most generally a step backwards in terms of quality of living is ultimately assumed. With regards to the interviewee in question, she described an experience in which once arriving in New York, she moved in to an apartment that was no larger than 500 ft.? and housed no less than six people; whereas in her home country, she had lived in the apartment that was nearly 700 ft.? and housed only three people. ... o the United States within the past 250 years, the reader should be mindful of the fact that the immigrant experience is ultimately different due to the rules and regulations of US visas and permits. Whereas 200 years ago the United States was willing to accept individuals as a means of providing labor to the rapidly industrializing system, the United States is currently reach the status of a highly developed nation and no longer requires the massive influx of unskilled immigrants to power the means of economic growth. However, this is not to say that migration and integration is no longer encouraged. The ultimate financial incentives that drove her to se ek out opportunities within the United States remain the fundamental defining characteristics of why I like the United States is continually attractive. With regards to the question of whether or not she would consider going back to her own country, the response came not as a function of seeking to define the fact that she now considered yourself an American where that she identified with, understood, and appreciated American culture; rather, the response was concentric upon the fact that she would not be able to make the same level of money and her own country as she was able to within the United States. This understanding necessarily brings the reader/researcher to the realization as to why it oftentimes takes to or three generations in order for the individuals to consider themselves an

Richards Soliloquies Essay Example for Free
Richards Soliloquies Essay i)Identify the context for each ii)Analyze the language of each and its meaning iii)Consider what insights they give into Richardââ¬â¢s character, emotions and thinking at the time iv)Discuss how the soliloquies help structure the play and are used to create dramatic interest 1. The opening soliloquy: ââ¬Å"Now is the winter of our discontentâ⬠1. 1. 1-41 The opening soliloquy involves of Richard contemplating the end of the civil war, and the change from warfare to peace. This soliloquy is important to the rest of the play as it shows Richardââ¬â¢s true character ââ¬â malicious, deformed and cunning. It helps set up the dramatic irony for the rest of Richardââ¬â¢s encounters, because as Richard ââ¬Ëactsââ¬â¢ we see him for who he truly is. The language that Richard uses is clever, sarcastic and determined. His second line, ââ¬Ëmade glorious summer by this son of Yorkââ¬â¢ is a play on words of Edward being the ââ¬Ësonââ¬â¢ of York and the ââ¬Ësunââ¬â¢ of the glorious summer. From this first line the audience is immediately able to tell that Richard is witty, and clever with the way in which he speaks and phrases his words. He continues on to talk about the King in a somewhat sardonic manner, bringing attention to his ââ¬Ësportive tricksââ¬â¢ and amorous pleasures. Richard continues, objecting to himself that ââ¬Ësince I cannot prove a loverââ¬â¢ he reveals that he is ââ¬Ëdetermined to prove a villainââ¬â¢. This quote foreshadows how the rest of the play will pan out, and how Richard is depicted throughout. The most important thing in this quote however, is that this quote shows a logical decision in which Richard has made ââ¬â therefore his malignity is motiveless. He chooses to be evil, and his only excuse for it is that he is unfortunately deformed. The brings the next point. In his soliloquy, Richard also draws on self-deprecation, he describes to us his deformities in the most gruesome way. This immediately gives the audience prejudice against him. ââ¬Å"Cheated of feature by dissembling nature / Deformed, unfinished, sent before my time / into this breathing world scarce half made up / And that so lamely unfashionable / That dogs bark at me as I half by them. â⬠The audience ultimately feels pity for him, however when its is made clear that Richard has thought about his premeditated strategems, the audience is aware of his duplicitous nature. 2. ââ¬Å"He cannot liveâ⬠soliloquy: 1. 1. 146-163 Act 1 scene 1 closes with Richardsââ¬â¢ second soliloquy. Although it is fairly short, Richard hopes for Clarence to die before Edward does. He also reveals his plans to ââ¬Ëwooââ¬â¢ Lady Anne, from the House of Warwick. The audience truly sees the full revelation of Richardââ¬â¢s wickedness, as he claims to have killed Lady Anneââ¬â¢s father and husband in the war that has just passed and yet he still wants to seduce her. However this sickening twist makes sense to Richard, as he wants to woo her so that the House of Lancaster donââ¬â¢t turn on him in the future. The concept of ââ¬Ëkeeping your enemies close for political gainââ¬â¢ comes across through Richardââ¬â¢s actions. Richard uses the strange yet humourous words to describe what the world will be like when he is King. He says, ââ¬Å"Which done, God take King Edward to his mercy / And leave the world for me to bustle in! â⬠The word bustle seems quite merry, and this reflects on how Richard has no grief or anguish to his brothersââ¬â¢ deaths ââ¬â he merely wants them dead so that he is able to enjoy the world. The last line Richard says ââ¬Å"When they are gone, then must I count my gains. â⬠Richard is talking about his brothers Clarence and Edward, and the foreshadowing of their deaths closes the scene. This soliloquy allows the audience to realize and prepare ourselves for what Richard has in mind. He confirms that both his brothers will die ââ¬â Clarence because of him and Edward because of sickness. The audience realizes that Richard is truly going to go through with his premeditated strategems, and this is only the beginning, however his downfall is also inevitable and anticipated. 3. ââ¬Å"Was ever womanâ⬠¦wooedâ⬠soliloquy: 1. 2. 231-67 This soliloquy is a perfect example of Richardââ¬â¢s duplicitous nature. As soon as Lady Anne leaves, he drops his mask and becomes who he really is ââ¬â the schemer. He revels in his triumph in getting Anne to consider being wooed by him. Despite his killing of her husband and her father, and despite his deformities, he has managed to overwhelm Anne using only his words. This is where the audience really sees how overpowering Richard is, and how if he was to really reign as king there would be many dangers. The audience assumes that Richard would be triumphant in scoring Lady Anne, however he says ââ¬Å"Was ever woman in this humour wooed? / Was ever woman in this humour won? / Iââ¬â¢ll have her, but I will not keep her long. â⬠Through this quote the audience realizes that Richard merely wooed her for security of safety from the House of Lancaster (which Lady Anne belongs to), and he has the upper hand now that his wooing has transformed her loathing into acceptance. The foreshadowing of this quote also allows the audience to note that Lady Anne will ultimately be killed somewhere along Richardââ¬â¢s plans. The last lines in Richardââ¬â¢s third soliloquy goes ââ¬Å"That I may see my shadow as I pass. â⬠The use of his ââ¬Ëshadowââ¬â¢ outlines his malevolent alter-ego, the evil Richard is lurking, hiding, but always present. Richard is constantly building up his plans and notably successing as each person goes by him and accepts him. This soliloquy shows how Richard really does have a way with his words, and how he can turn Lady Anneââ¬â¢s loathing and hatred (after all, Richard did kill her husband and her father) into acceptance and tolerance. The audience is somewhat admirable of him, yet they realize it is all just an act by a clever, manipulative person. 4. ââ¬Å"I do the wrongâ⬠soliloquy: 1. 3. 324-338 In this soliloquy Richard expresses slight disbelief and smugness in how things have played out for him. He has managed to get Clarence killed and blame it on Rivers, Vaughn and Grey, as well as get Hastings, Derby and Buckingham to support him. His tone is proud when he admits that his malicious plots at the beginning of the play have become othersââ¬â¢ evil actions. Richard has mastered the game of manipulation, and has everyone (except for a few) believing that he is a holy and good man. By usingà preexisting conflicts, as well as his ââ¬Å"relationshipâ⬠and ââ¬Å"appealâ⬠to God, he is going to set everyone against each other. This is where we realize that Richard has managed to weave a web that he has total control over ââ¬â for now. Richard says, ââ¬Å"Tell them that God bids us do good for evil. And thus I clothe my naked villainy / With odd old ends stolââ¬â¢n forth of holy writ, / And seems a saint when most I play the devil. â⬠These lines sum up Richardââ¬â¢s role as an actor within himself, within the play. He claims to use the Bible as his sanction and yet he contradicts himself by cloacking himself as the devil. 5. ââ¬Å"Give me another horse! â⬠soliloquy: 5. 3. 180 This soliloquy is the first time that Richard feels any guilt for his actions, and this is also where he finally realizes what he has ultimately done to himself and to the people around him. His mind is in turmoil, and the tone of his soliloquy is deeply troubling. He is wrestling to come to terms with all the murders he has indirectly caused and all the threats of vengeance he has posed. This is Richardââ¬â¢s last soliloquy, and from the beginning of the play he has come a full circle. In the beginning, Richard portrayed himself as an megalomaniac and egotistical, he gloated ââ¬Å"As I am subtle, false and treacherous,â⬠and now he says, ââ¬Å"O coward conscience, how dost thou afflict me? â⬠The personification of ââ¬Ëconscienceââ¬â¢ and how it has become cowardly shows that Richard now considers his conscience as a part of him, something that he didnââ¬â¢t have before. The rheotorical question is more posed towards himself. He is unsure and worried, and this is reflected in the next couple of lines. ââ¬Å"What? Do I fear myself? Thereââ¬â¢s none else by. Richard loves Richard, that is, I am I. / Is there a murderer here? No. Yes, I am. â⬠The manifestation for himself and the unclearness is a reflection of how muddled his mind has become. Richard wrestles and tries to confirm with himself that he is doing the right thing, that he isnââ¬â¢t a murderer, that there is no one who loves him but himself, but his conscience has finally caught up with him and as a result, the murder and threats of vengeance have come rushing back to him. The full realm of the horror that has become his life hits him inà the face ââ¬â he finally realizes that he is truly and utterly alone. He says: ââ¬Å"There is no creature loves me, / And if I die no soul shall pity me. â⬠His segregation from humanity dominates him at this point in the play, when he finally grasps that he is truly all alone. This soliloquy foreshadows Richardââ¬â¢s inevitable and imminent death. It is the last time the audience really feels something for Richard, whether it be pity or sadness or justification, the audience understands that Richard has finished and come to the end of his time.
